About me

Over 40 years of professional work my design experience has ranged widely, with dozens of set and costume designs in Florida, New York, and New England, encompassing Lort regional theatres, NYC, summer stock, amusement parks, a national tour, and an independent film.  My scenic art/painting work includes theatre, entertainment, industrials, museum, and corporate clients including over 2 years as a scenic artist for Walt Disney World.  I’ve created artwork for exhibition in public spaces - the Tube in London and Los Angeles, billboards in Orlando and New Orleans, and an installation at Sun Trust Square in Orlando. In London, Berlin, Orlando, and LA, my artwork has been exhibited in galleries, as well as in a digital showcase in Venice, in an online gallery responding to the 2016 election, and on The Nation’s Opp Art online daily political protest page. This wide variety of experience has grounded me in the importance of being seen as an artist who listens and observes, brings a lot of ideas and energy to the table in collaborations, has solutions for practical aspects of fabrication, and maintains a strong work ethic.

Although interested in acting at first, I had not discovered theatre design until my sophomore year at WVU after semesters of fine art, when I recognized that it was the perfect combination for my skills and interests. Just after graduation I was fortunate to be hired professionally to set up and manage a costume shop and design for the Sandusky, Ohio-based amusement park, Cedar Point, Inc.  Five years and 70 shows later, I returned to theatre through my graduate studies at UCONN, having accumulated an initial background of varied experiences.

As an educator, guiding young artists to find their unique voices through discovering and working a creative process is the through thread in the pedagogy that I have developed at Tufts University and Rollins College, and am always striving to improve. Over the past 30 years, I have found that the idea of theatre performances that transcend materials and evoke a deeper audience connection echos through my teaching methods and ideals based on the dual aspects of my artistic life and work.

Throughout my career I have been fortunate to teach and design in Liberal Arts schools that have been open to and encouraged the exploration of creative methodology and experimentation in theatre labs. In my pedagogy I use every aspect of my creative work and experience to support students’ growth towards building confidence in expressing their ideas so that they can become effective collaborators. The design project discussions in my studio classes emphasize students gaining the confidence to listen and be open to change, and the drawing and painting projects aim at students acquiring the tools to communicate their ideas clearly and effectively. I am always in the process of seeking to better develop a method to model and encourage creative process and support my students’ first steps into becoming creative artists, regardless of what area of theatre, art, or design they are drawn to.
